Roads to Migrate – Rising Hostility Against Refugees , Gizem Dik Hosts Prof. Halil Berktay
In the fifth episode of the Roads to Migrate, Gizem Dik hosts Professor Halil Berktay, from Ibn Haldun University, to talk about the migration turmoils over the world. According to Berktay, besides the environmental issues, the biggest case faced by humankind in the first quarter of the 21st century is migration. Expressing that these two problems are closely related in that they are two major unintended consequences of capitalist modernity, Berktay says they will continue effectively for the rest of the 21st century.
As in the case of migration from Europe to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century, today, much greater populations think of finding an exit and starting a new life for themselves in the world's affluent societies. Professor Berktay emphasizes that while there are all kinds of physical possibilities to cross borders in the age we live in, the only obstacle standing in the way of immigrants is the anti-immigration policies of the developed countries in question.
