Issues Relating to Immigration Detention of Children

The International Refugee Rights Association (IRRA) and the Global Detention Project (GDP) are pleased to have the chance to share pertinent information regarding Turkey's compliance with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child during its 93rd session, as part of the fourth and fifth periodic review.
The submission titled “Issues Relating to Immigration Detention of Children” addresses the state party's regulations and practices regarding the detention of children for immigration-related reasons. It is presented in consideration of the Committee on the Rights of the Child's (CRC) authoritative General Comment No. 5, which focuses on migrants' rights to liberty and protection from arbitrary detention. Additionally, it takes into account the joint General Comment No. 23 (2017)/No. 4 (2017) by the CRC and the Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families (CMW), which outlines state obligations concerning the human rights of children in the context of international migration in countries of origin, transit, destination, and return.
